I. BACKGROUND

Van Rompaey – Vaes traces its origins right down to two longstanding law practices, founded in 1860 by Mr. Eugène Vaes and in 1870 by Mr. Alfred Donnet.

The decease of Mr. Marc Vaes in 1980 resulted, after a fruitfull co-operation between both practices, into the establishment of a middle-sized law firm, named Donnet & Vaes.

Since the law firm is located in the city of Antwerp (second international sea port of Europe and Commercial heart of Belgium), with Belgium being the very center of European transportation and trade, the emphasis of the law firm has traditionnally been focused on a strong maritime, transportation and insurance practice.

In 2000 a new partnership has been formed under the name Van Rompaey & Vaes, which law firm had grown into a well established commercial law firm.

A formal co-operation-agreement has been entered into with a Brussels law firm (22 lawyers), as well as a law firm at Liège (24 lawyers), and plans to deepen the co-operation, or even to merge are to materialize in the future.
